The Sanskrit word bandha is linked etymologically with such English words as ‘band’, ‘bind’, ‘bond’, and ‘bound’.162. Abdominal Uplift: UddiyanaUddiyana – one of the three main bandhas of Hatha Yoga – means ‘flying up’. It is associated with the most esoteric of Yoga practices – the control of the flow of energies (prana) and their movement (‘flying’) up the central channel of the spine to the brain. Though classified as a bandha, Uddiyana or abdominal uplift is one of the most valuable exercises of Yoga in its own right, and unequalled for the culture of the abdomen.Stand with the feet spread about one foot apart. Stoop forward slightly, bend the knees a little, and place the palms of the hands and the spread fingers on the thighs just above the knees, with the fingers turned inwards.
Using both nostrils and mouth for maximum speed and effect, empty the lungs of air – some residual air will always remain, but you will not be aware of it. Pressing the hands down on the thighs and, concentrating on the solar plexus, draw the abdominal wall back and up into the thoracic cavity.
In time, provided there has been a thorough exhalation, the retraction will be effortless (Fig. 65).Perform this on an empty stomach, and after emptying the bladder (bowels too if possible). As breathing has been ‘locked’, the control should not be held longer than five seconds at first, increasing gradually to ten seconds.
Perform three times, increasing to six times after some weeks.Uddiyana strengthens the abdominal muscles, removes superfluous fat, provides an internal massage as the abdominal viscera are drawn back and squeezed, and improves digestion and elimination from the bowels. The raised diaphragm is said to massage and tone the muscles of the heart. It has been found to correct menstrual irregularities, but should not be performed during menstruation or pregnancy.Once a deep and easily-held retraction is achieved, you may consider mastering the spectacular muscle control of isolating the central recti muscles.
